This is a core unit out of a total of 8 units in the Diploma of IT (DIT). This unit addresses the DIT course learning outcomes and complements other courses in a related field by developing students’ knowledge and skills in Multimedia Systems. This course provides a solid foundation for understanding the key issues associated with designing successful, multimedia application. The purpose of the course is to facilitate proficient Multimedia Application development through thorough explanations and numerous hands-on activities. Students will be introduced to overall Multimedia application development for example animations, audio and video editing and embed these application in simple webpages. In addition, this unit will look into design of simple webpages with user interaction in mind. This unit also covers ethical and legal issues (e.g. accessibility, intellectual property and copyright) related to multimedia and the Internet.
This unit will cover the following topics:
- Multimedia: its definitions, characteristics and properties.
- Uses and application of multimedia.
- Basic elements of multimedia (text, image, sound, animation and video).
- Hardware and software requirements for developing multimedia systems.
- Fundamentals of multimedia projects (project team, phases of multimedia development)
- Delivery modes, bandwidth issues of multimedia over the Internet.
- Web authoring tools to create web pages.
- Legal and cultural issues, censorship and copyright.
- Multimedia to enhance communication.
At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Describe the major aspects of multimedia technology.
- Discuss the range and appropriate use of multimedia.
- Identify and describe issues relating to privacy, security, copyright and censorship.
- Plan, design, produce and test a simple multimedia project.
- Plan and write an essay conforming to the MIT guidelines for presentation of academic work
- Utilise various software tools to produce a small multimedia application.
- Develop simple, well-designed web pages that include multimedia
